| Volunteer Profile: Bob Hawk | |||

As the Oscars have just been awarded, we figured it was a perfect time to highlight our resident movie bigwig. Bob is an independent film consultant and producer, whose recent projects include Big Eden, Trick and Chasing Amy. Though the bright lights of Cannes or Sundance may beckon, Bob never forgets his commitment to God's Love We Deliver. He does not take individual appointments on Fridays so that he can make sure that he is available for the full eight hour van assistant shift. "I tend to be a workaholic, and can get wound up in my projects," Bob says. "[Volunteering at GLWD] gives me balance. It reminds me to make something else besides work a priority." Take that, Hollywood! Bob has been a van assistant since March 1996. He was introduced to God's Love by our very own David Christmas, a long-time friend from his theater days in the '60s. Since then, Bob has gone on every delivery route and with every driver. Though he refuses to name favorites (he loves every driver equally!), he does cite Seth Cohen, once a van driver, as a personal friend. They would get along so famously that Seth used to request Bob to assist him on his route. Their teamwork in delivering meals resulted in a friendship, one that continues even though Seth is now working in the volunteer office. Bob is the son of a minister, so he is no stranger to volunteering. "You can say that I've been a volunteer all my life!" He has volunteered longer and more consistently at GLWD than anywhere else because he believes that it is "such a worthy cause." The expressions of gratitude from clients keep him motivated; he especially likes the way "the clients' faces light up when they receive a treat" for their birthday or a holiday. This is the reward for the more than 1100 hours and seven years he has volunteered here. Though there have been some "bumps" in the road-such as one rainy day, when a tire on a van blew out, Bob and the driver accidentally put the spare on backwards-Bob's experience at GLWD has been a smooth ride. He is very thankful that GLWD entered his life, and plans to volunteer here for as long as he is physically able. With his health in great condition, we expect to see him on the vans for many years to come! |
